Hurricane Rita Hammers Florida Keys

Rita strengthened into a hurricane overnight with sustained top wind of 85 mph and pummeled the Florida Keys with flooding rain and strong wind. The islands face a storm surge of up to 6 feet and up to 8 inches of rain.

Rita is expected to continue gaining strength up to a Category 3 as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico for a weekend landfall, probably in Texas.
